In this week’s episode, I spoke with fund manager, Dario Mofardin.
With a finance degree in hand, Dario went straight into a market analyst position, followed by a trader position at a private global macro hedge fund in the early 90’s. From there, he began to work with mergers and acquisitions from all over the world, spending 13 years in investment banking.
Since 2008, Dario has been independently trading but has recently begun to trade external funds as well.
Major topics of discussion include; how to see the whole board as a global macro trader, building a body of evidence, why Dario moved away from short-term trading in favor of longer timeframes, as well as trade management and checklists.
What’s Covered in This Interview:
- The circumstances that led Dario to discover trading, having natural intuition, his introduction to global macro, and whether or not his financial degree was at all useful.
- Dario used to feel as though he was punting at the casino each, even while fairly successful, and how this lead him to investment banking.
- How to see the whole board; Dario shares how building a body of evidence using global macro factors and technical analysis forms a big picture thesis.
- Why Dario transitioned from being a short-term trader to a swing and position trader — the benefits lay primarily in larger profit opportunities.
- A short history and explanation of the Elliott Wave Principle, and the way Dario uses this charting analysis technique to put together the framework for big picture trends and entry points.
- The primary global macro drivers that affect Dario’s market outlook, his method for using intermarket analysis, and why he generally favors a contrarian mindset.
Dario’s trader checklist and the most important items on it, including self-analysis at the start of the trading day, and his strategy for reviewing decisions later on.
