Interview with Nell Sloane – Chat with Traders Episode 127

Today’s guest, Nell Sloane, is not an actual trader. However, she’s been around the exchanges and markets for around 30 years, mostly in jobs that assisted commodity brokers and traders in a myriad of ways.

From 2006 onwards, Nell has been with Capital Trading Group as the Principal. This is a Chicago investment firm which she co-founded with Patrick Lafferty. Her impressive work history is the exact reason why I invited Nell to speak with me on the podcast. In fact, the role of her company is to support traders who want to expand their careers by helping others manage money for other people as a CTA.

Capital Trading Group also helps individual and professional investors to navigate their managed futures. However, for this episode, we mostly focus on what it takes to manage a CTA business successfully.

I hope you enjoy today’s interview.

What’s Covered in This Interview:

  • Nell on what it means to run a CTA business
  • The similarities and differences between CTAs and hedge funds and its common fee structures.
  • Nell on whether the future is less lucrative.
  • What the incentives are for an independent trader to become a CTA. Nell dives into how someone can get started at the beginning of their career, including general track record requirements and infrastructure.
  • Common early stage challenges and typical mistakes new CTAs tend to make. Here’s a hint: in almost all cases, marketing is just as important as your performance.
  • A look into the different ways CTAs can market themselves to gain capital from investors as well as develop ongoing relationships
  • An overview of the auditing procedures and regulation checks CTAs have to face.
