Kevin Muir Interview – Chat With Traders Episode 138

How are you all doing, traders, investors and hustlers?

This week’s guest is Kevin Muir. I first knew of him from my friend Ari Pine. Initially I resisted, but I was open to a chat after Ari spoke to me.

Kevin works for RBC Dominion Securities as a derivatives trader in the 90s. But for a long while now, he’s been on his own trading by himself. You may also know him from his blog, The Macro Tourist.

One of the cool things about Kevin is that he doesn’t specialize in one type of trading. In fact, he’s always on the looking for the next great trader. He’s dabbled in everything from Bitcoin, convertible bonds, day trading to risk arbitrage.

We discuss his experience with all these trading methods on the episode. We also talk about when he used to work in RBC desk and balancing global macro and day trading. Let’s not forget Kevin’s story about the discovery of Oil in Norway. It truly encapsulates the mindset of a trader.

Without further ado, here’s Kevin Muir.

What’s Covered in This Interview:

  • Kevin’s lessons from when he was a derivatives trader for RBC Dominion Securities, including his insights as to what is obvious is usually useless and how lots of things in hindsight look easy.
  • Smaller traders and the opportunities open to them.
  • Why Kevin is eager to find the “next great trade”, anywhere from convertible bonds to mining Bitcoin.
  • Kevin’s balancing act between global macro and intraday trading.
  • Personality types best suited for macro trading.
  • Kevin’s insight into a recent trading scenario.
  • A story which encapsulates a great trader – how this person was able to make a ton of money from the discovery of oil in Norway, without needing to trade oil.
