Saul Knapp Interview – Chat With Traders Episode 076

This week’s featured guest is Saul Knapp.

Saul started out at just 16 years of age as a runner on the floor of the LIFFE exchange in London. Since then, he’s held various positions as a risk manager for proprietary trading firms, and at times, monitored positions for as many as 120 traders. Today, Saul runs his own small prop firm where he lives in Spain.

In terms of trading strategy, Saul is a spread trader who’s most active in the energy markets. We discuss spread trading in our conversation, as well as his observations from helping other traders and his roles as a risk manager.

What’s Covered in This Interview:

  • Saul reminisces about his earliest experiences trading on the floor, acting as an assistant risk manager, and joining an early-stage prop firm (stuffed into attic space).
  • Hear about one of Saul’s worst trading days; the day he was caught off-guard by a “super spike” caused by a fat-finger trade (also hear him explain the term “fat-finger”).
  • The benefits of spread training, as well as Saul’s detailed explanation of this approach and why he favors it over outright trading.
  • Saul’s outlook on risk management and how he managed risk for proprietary traders, as well as the absolutely necessary risk parameters.
